About Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire sits directly north of London and shares its eastern border with Essex. Hertford, the county town, lies on the River Lea, with the market town of Ware a short distance downstream. Bishop's Stortford and Sawbridgeworth sit on the River Stort along the Essex border, close to Stansted Airport, while Stevenage, the first town designated under the New Towns Act in 1946, anchors the centre of the county.
The West Anglia Main Line links Bishop's Stortford and Sawbridgeworth to London Liverpool Street, with a branch serving Ware and Hertford East, and Stevenage sits on the East Coast Main Line out of King's Cross. By road, the M11 runs along the county's eastern edge, the A120 connects Bishop's Stortford towards Braintree, the A10 passes through Ware and Hertford, and the A1(M) serves Stevenage. Housing ranges from period cottages and Victorian terraces in the market towns to 1930s semis, post-war neighbourhoods in Stevenage and newer commuter developments, many with driveways and garages well suited to roller doors.
